Christmas Decorations

CHRISTMAS CRACKER

All you need to make your own crackers is empty toilet roll tubes, paper, thread
and glue, plus something to put in them and something to decorate them with.

POMANDERS

Pomanders were once carried around on the person, either on a stick or hung around the neck, to ward off the noxious smells of the streets in pre-sanitation days. We can now use these delightful-smelling objects to decorate our homes and Christmas trees. For best results, make your pomanders at least a month before Christmas. When you have studded the surface of the orange with cloves, place it in a PAPER bag and add a generous handful of powdered orris root or, if you can't get that, talcum powder (the weaker the scent the better - baby powder is probably best.) Screw the neck of the bag up and give it all a good shake, and place in a WARM, DRY place such as the airing cupboard for at least a month or until the orange has shrivelled, dried and shrunk. If they haven't dried fully they will eventually go mouldy, so it is better to err on the side of caution and make sure they're absolutely dry.
